"Quid Pro Quo" exactly means "This For That." It stems from the Roman worship of Numen, or divine spirits, that resided in everything. When they wanted to cut down a tree, for instance, they would sacrifice something to the numen of that tree. People often refer to it in a positive sense, but it can mean the opposite. If Tom did something similar to this to the person who might be hiring him, then it could be an act of retribution. Ergo This for that, you don't give me an interview, I don't give you one. Q.E.D.
