Why do these central american countries have such a high crime rate?

Well I'm in Guatemala right now and I was just robbed two weeks ago. It wasn't by poor people either. The people who robbed me lived in the same apartment building as me. They stole my laptop and it wasn't so that they could have money to feed them or their children, it was because whoever did this is lazy and doesnt want work for what he wants but would rather take it at someone else's expense. I imagine that this could be a reason for crime in lots of places. Lazy loser excuses for persons. But it's never the whole culture that is that way. It's sad that they get such a bad name.
