The more I research about China . . .?

Just obey their laws, keep out of any political protests etc and act as safely and sensibly as you would at home and you'll be fine. There's more freedom here than you'd believe by just taking everything you hear/see as gospel. If you don't like China from what you read and see, try going for a taster month, and travel outside the tour party bubble. I moved to China in 2002 and as the ubiquitous McD's say even here, 'I'm loving it!'
